Do I Qualify For A Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is a great way to improve the shape of the abdomen. It is not a weight loss procedure, but a contouring procedure that gives you a flatter stomach or better curves.
Good candidates for tummy tucks include those who have experienced significant weight loss, or women who have stretched muscles resulting from pregnancy and/or weight fluctuations. Anyone who has stretched stomach muscles and cannot achieve the look they desire through diet and exercise is a good candidate for a tummy tuck.
Those who qualify for a tummy tuck:
- Have loose skin around the abdomen. A tummy tuck flattens the abdomen and removes loose skin. If you are more concerned with fat in the mid-section, consider liposuction.
- Are in relatively good health. You should not smoke or drink before the procedure. Because you will be sedated with general anesthesia, you should be in good health. Diet and exercise after a tummy tuck are important to maintain results.
- Have realistic expectations about surgery. Tummy tucks involve surgery and there is a significant amount of recovery time, and your results will appear gradually as your healing progresses. To maintain the results of your tummy tuck, you will need to eat a healthy diet and maintain a regular exercise routine.
- Are not planning on losing more weight. Patients should be within 15-20 pounds of their ideal weight. If you lose a significant amount of weight after a tummy tuck, you may experience more loose skin.
Those who have not yet tried diet and exercise to flatten their stomach are not good candidates for a tummy tuck. Patients should be finished having children, as pregnancy will stretch the stomach and muscles out again.
